What Is Wreaths Across America?
Wreaths Across America began at Arlington National Cemetery by Maine businessman, Morrill Worcester, in 1992. Morrill was the owner of the Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington Maine, and in 1992, after many memorable trips as a child and as an adult to Washington DC and Arlington National Cemetery, the Worcester Wreath Company found they had a surplus of wreaths and made plans to place these wreaths upon graves in the older section at the Arlington National Cemetery.
In 2007, the annual Christmas wreath ceremony in Arlington formed Wreaths Across America™, to continue and expand this effort.
Every year volunteers lay wreaths on over 100,000 gravestones throughout Arlington Cemetery. It’s a beautiful sight and sentiment honoring our fallen soldiers. While you’re there be sure to watch the hourly Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Holiday wreaths will remain in place from mid-Dec through mid-Jan.
